Joe Soap's Masquerade: July 30th-August 3rd 2014

'....talk of nature and of a life that is creatively affirming and most of all, they sustain a magical local tradition.’

 Newbury Weekly News.

'Joe Soap's Masquerade!'

A biennial event on the West Berkshire calendar, the Boxford Masques date back to the late 19th century when local writer Charlotte Peake established an annual midsummer celebration based on her own stories of nature and magic.

The arrival of the first world war put an end to the yearly tradition and it was not revived again until the start of this century when it became a charitable community play. Relocated from the natural amphitheatre at the top of Hoar Hill to the magnificent house at Welford Estate, the 2012 Masque, like before, was written by local author Geraldine McCaughrean, whose stories for children - including Peter Pan In Scarlet, a continuation of JM Barrie's classic - have won every award going.

Directed by famous local theatre director Ade Morris, the Masques has participation from around 100 local people as cast and crew ranging from 5 -65 in age.
